After downloading the free app from the App Store

After downloading the free app from the App Store, you'll have to sign in to go any further. Don't be fazed by this extra step, as there's a very good reason for it. Once you sign in, you'll see any previous searches plus integration and custom maps.

The interface is clean, simple, exceedingly user-friendly. There's a field at the top to search for locations or addresses, the main map windowfront and center as you would expect, and a tab in the lower right that slides out so you can choose layers. The layers section pops in from the right to let you toggle traffic, public transit, and satellite views, and it offers a link to the Google Earth app for 3D views and other features (more on that in a minute). And once you tap on an address or location, you can jump right to Street View without leaving the app. It takes a couple of tries to figure out how to get there (click on the related photo), but you'll remember after you do it the first time.

Suspicious letters questioning voters' legal status

Attention voters! We have begun to witness locally, and at least in 14 other counties, efforts to suppress Republican votes in the upcoming election.

Suspicious letters questioning voters' legal status and citizenship began arriving in Florida over the past four days with a postmark from Seattle, Wash., accompanying a $.45 stamp. The local letter is supposedly from the Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections Office of Earl Lennard, and from the appropriate supervisor of elections for other recipients around the state.

Several things should strike prospective voters' attention right away: First, the elections supervisor would not use a mailing house from out of state. They would not use stamps. And all official correspondences would have the Hillsborough supervisor's seal or the seal from individual county offices.

The Daily Iowan described Karras as having the “size

Alex Karras, a Hawkeye football star from 1955 to 1957, died Wednesday. He was 77.

In 1957, Karras' senior year, he earned the Outland Trophy, a distinction that names the best lineman in the nation. Karras was named the runner up for the Heisman Trophy that same season.

The Daily Iowan described Karras as having the "size, desire, quickness, agility, and speed to go with his power physique" prior to his sophomore year in 1955. The article also stated, "If there is much more a lineman needs, the coaches have not discovered it." Karras started for Iowa all three years.

The Hawkeyes won the Rose Bowl in 1956 with Karras' help, defeating Oregon State, 35-19, and finishing out the season with a 9-1 record.

Washington fell behind 24-7 late in the second quarter before scoring 17

Washington fell behind 24-7 late in the second quarter before scoring 17 straight points to tie the score. The Redskins then gave up two quick touchdowns in the fourth quarter before a two-yard touchdown run by Griffin with 3 minutes 38 seconds left to play pulled them within seven.

On the ensuing onside kick, Washingtontouched the ball just before it traveled the required 10 yards, giving the ball to Cincinnati. But the defense held, and the Redskins got the ball back on their own 2-yard line with just 1:47 left and no timeouts. Still they were able to drive to the Bengals' 19 before a sack and penalties drove them backward 40 yards, ending their hopes.

"It's always frustrating," said Griffin, who was sacked six times for 53 yards and also fumbled while getting hit during a pitch. "But one thing we're not going to ever do is stop fighting. I think it showed a lot of heart of the team, but the bottom line is we've got to come away with those victories."

The league's investigation found that Saints coaches and players

"Whether the commissioner tries to readdress the situation or not is his call," said Peter Ginsberg, Vilma's attorney. "We are certainly hoping the appeals board has made it clear the commissioner tried to grab jurisdiction and impose penalties over an area he does not have oversight. ... The factual record in the court makes it clear he has acted in a biased and inappropriate manner."

In a memo sent to all 32 NFL teams after the ruling and obtained by AP, NFL legal counsel Jeff Pash emphasized that "nothing in today's decision contradicts any of the facts found in the investigation into this matter, or absolves any player of responsibility for conduct detrimental. Nor does the decision in any way suggest what discipline would be appropriate for conduct that lies within the authority of the Commissioner."

The league's investigation found that Saints coaches and players, led by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, ran a program from 2009-11 that offered cash payouts for hits that injured opponents. It said specific bounties were placed on quarterbacks Kurt Warner and Brett Favre in the 2009-10 playoffs.

Training camp started Monday

Thursday was media day at Beaver Stadium. Training camp started Monday. The countdown is under way. The Jerry Sandusky scandal, its complicated aftermath and the NCAAsanctions are history, too. As O'Brien has continually preached, nothing good can come from looking back. It's become his theme. And it's the only productive way to attack the reality of their situation. The only certainty, going forward, is that they're in this as one. Because they chose to.

"I should have charged admission," is the way the former New England Patriots' assistant opened his press conference. Then he got serious. Because he has an unenviable job. And this is merely the beginning.

Coach Leslie Frazier said Friday that Peterson put up a fight

The move was expected, considering the team's preference to be cautious with its franchise player and his comeback from reconstructive surgery on his left knee. Peterson can come off the PUP list at any time, but he can't take part in drills with the team until then. He still counts against the 90-man roster.

Coach Leslie Frazier said Friday that Peterson put up a fight but the decision is best for the team.

"Ultimately I knew how the conversation was going, that it wasn't going to go my way no matter what I thought," Peterson said. "But I understand the decision."

Long before it toppled into recent bankruptcy proceedings

No question, the place has hosted its share of heroes and historical figures, and we don't mean the kind wherein their battle gear featured a dimpled ball and chromed shafts. More like lead balls and blunderbusses.

Long before it toppled into recent bankruptcy proceedings, West Virginia's venerable Greenbrier Resort was at various time the property of both the Confederate and Union armies during the Civil War, which brings us to a rather apt analogy.

In an attempt to put the resort back on the map of relevance after years of serious financial issues, Greenbrier owner Jim Justice has been dipping into his massive financial war chest to win a PGA Tour player recruiting war with tournaments that don't have the same cash cannon at their disposal.

According to people familiar with the BCS discussions

Among the details left to be determined: when and where two semifinals and a national championship game will be played; how the four teams will be selected; what will become of the existing BCS bowl games; and how the conferences will divide as much as $400 million to $500 million in annual TV revenue.

"Some of the details have to be worked out," Swofford said. "I think we can get there on most of it."

According to people familiar with the BCS discussions, the commissioners are leaning toward incorporating the semifinals into the existing BCS bowl games (Fiesta, Orange, Rose and Sugar). At this point, according to sources, the commissioners are leaning toward having predetermined semifinal sites -- which would be designated before a particular season begins -- and rotating them among the BCS bowls.

Yet Chris Paul and Blake Griffin say they aren't scared of the rugged Grizzlies

The other four series start Sunday. San Antonio hosts Utah in the opener, followed by the Lakers against Denver. Boston visits Atlanta before Memphis welcomes the Clippers in the two 4-5 series at night.

The Celtics have the higher seed as Atlantic Division champions but the Hawks get home-court advantage based on their better record. The Grizzlies snatched home-court advantage from the Clippers by winning their final six games while Los Angeles dropped three of its final four.

Yet Chris Paul and Blake Griffin say they aren't scared of the rugged Grizzlies, who were a game away from the West finals last year and are a trendy pick to get there this time.

"It's just like any other NBA team," Griffin said. "They've got good bigs, they've got good guards. You've got to be ready to play. We're not intimidated by them by any means."

previous appearance at AmericanAirlines Arena

A greater degree of revenge will have to wait.
But at least the Heat finally can say they have the Mavericks' regular-season number, if not the Larry O'Brien trophy that Dallas carted off in its previous appearance at AmericanAirlines Arena.
Sprinting to a 13-point lead in the third quarter and taking care of business from there, the Heat made it a sweep of the two-game season series with a 106-85 victory Thursday night.

Stars Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo

The Sixers play in Milwaukee tonight before returning to the Wells Fargo Center for their first meeting of the season with the Celtics, and All-Stars Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo.
With the loss to Chicago, the Sixers have lost eight straight games when facing an opponent with at least one player who made the 2012 All-Star Game.
Iguodala, the Sixers' All-Star, just can't do what those guys do as far as lifting his team when things aren't going well.

Much buzz to fulfill. The next Elway

Much buzz to fulfill. The next Elway? The next Peyton? Even better? If he reaches that level in the NFL, how do you not pick him?
The Huddle posed this choice Wednesday to NFL Network chief draft analyst Mike Mayock, a man whose opinion we greatly respect.

"It would be really hard to put Andrew Luck up there (with the others)," said Mayock. "I'll probably go with the known commodities."

He ceded that Stafford and Bradford both need to prove they can avoid injuries and that Ryan "needs to take the next step."

"Cam Newton had a year that was mind-boggling," Mayock added. He wants to see Newton continue to work hard while wondering "how well will NFL defenses adapt to what Carolina did?"
